Travel north on Route 3 through the mountainous province of Luang Nam Tha.
LUANG NAM THA: the provincial capital of Luang Namtha Province, this town is expanding rapidly in its role as a center for commerce between China, Thailand and Laos.

Muang Sing - Luang Nam Tha

Provincial capital of Luang Nam Tha Province, this town is expanding rapidly in its role as a centre for commerce between China, Thailand and Laos.
PHOUM POUK PAGODA: built by early settlers in valley in the year 1624 AD. Today the That (Stupa) is in ruins from bombing in the Indochina War.
BAN NAM NGEAN: this predominantly Black Tai Village is the largest village in the Luang Namtha Valley. The Black Tai are known for their silk production and weaving. Sometimes water wheels can be seen milling rice.
BAN NAM L?E: a 200 year old Lenten village. The Lenten are known for paper making and clothes dyed with indigo.
BAN DON MOUN: village of the Khmu people known for their basketry and water gourds.
If time permits visits can be arranged to Ban Yao, a Hmong village with a handicrafts cooperative, which has a selection of handicrafts from surrounding ethnic groups and/or Ban Nam Dii, another Lenten village near a nice waterfall (cold season only). Overnight in Luang Nam Tha.

Luang Nam Tha - Muang Xai - Nong Khiaw

Travel south through Ban Houalouang and Muang Mamo into Luang Nam Tha Province, a mountainous province with a substantial number of Lao Sung and 38 other ethnic minorities.By vehicle from Muang Xai to Nong Khiaw
Drive east along Route 1 via Nam Bak following the Nam Bak River for part of the route. Overnight in Nong Khiaw.
